Beschreibung | Joyce Hilda Banda (geborene Ntila; geboren am 12. April 1950) ist eine malawische Politikerin und war vom 7. April 2012 bis zum 31. Mai 2014 Präsidentin von Malawi. Banda übernahm das Amt des Präsidenten nach dem plötzlichen Tod von Präsident Bingu wa Mutharika. Sie ist die Gründerin und Vorsitzende der 2011 gegründeten Volkspartei (People's Party). Die Pädagogin und Frauenrechtsaktivistin war von 2006 bis 2009 Außenministerin und von Mai 2009 bis April 2012 Vizepräsidentin von Malawi. Bevor sie Präsidentin der Republik Malawi wurde, war sie in verschiedenen Funktionen als Parlamentsmitglied und Ministerin für Gleichstellungsfragen und Kinderwohlfahrt tätig. |
I got married at 22 and remained in an abusive marriage for 10 years. I made up my mind that that was never going to happen to me again. I made a brave step to walk out in a society when you didn't walk out of an abusive marriage. It was mental and physical abuse.
When I gave birth to my fourth child, I suffered from post partum hemorrhaging. I almost lost my life. I was lucky to be under the care of trained health care personnel. I started wondering then what was happening to women in rural villages.
