Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (/mænˈdɛlə/; Xhosa: [xolíɬaɬa mandɛ̂ːla]; 18. Juli 1918 - 5. Dezember 2013) war ein südafrikanischer Anti-Apartheid-Aktivist, der von 1994 bis 1999 der erste Präsident Südafrikas war. Er war das erste schwarze Staatsoberhaupt des Landes und das erste, das in einer vollständig repräsentativen demokratischen Wahl gewählt wurde. Seine Regierung konzentrierte sich darauf, das Erbe der Apartheid zu beseitigen, indem sie die Versöhnung der Rassen förderte. Ideologisch gesehen ist er ein afrikanischer Nationalist und Sozialist und war von 1991 bis 1997 Präsident der Partei Afrikanischer Nationalkongress (ANC).
