Bekannt unter seinem Pseudonym M. de Voltaire (/vɒlˈtɛər, voʊl-/; auch US: /vɔːl-/; französisch: [vɔltɛːʁ]), war er berühmt für seinen Witz und seine Kritik am Christentum - insbesondere an der römisch-katholischen Kirche - und an der Sklaverei.
