George Washington (22. Februar 1732 - 14. Dezember 1799) war ein amerikanischer Offizier, Staatsmann und Gründervater, der von 1789 bis 1797 als erster Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten amtierte. Vom Kontinentalkongress zum Befehlshaber der Kontinentalarmee ernannt, führte Washington die Streitkräfte der Patrioten im Amerikanischen Revolutionskrieg zum Sieg und diente als Präsident des Verfassungskonvents von 1787, der die Verfassung der Vereinigten Staaten und die amerikanische Bundesregierung schuf. Wegen seiner vielfältigen Führungsrolle in der Gründungszeit des Landes wurde Washington als "Vater seines Landes" bezeichnet.
