Beschreibung | Stephen Joshua Sondheim (/ˈsɒndhaɪm/; March 22, 1930 – November 26, 2021) was an American composer and lyricist. One of the most important figures in twentieth-century musical theater, Sondheim is credited for having "reinvented the American musical" with shows that tackle "unexpected themes that range far beyond the [genre's] traditional subjects" with "music and lyrics of unprecedented complexity and sophistication." His shows address "darker, more harrowing elements of the human experience," with songs often tinged with "ambivalence" about various aspects of life. He was known for his frequent collaborations with Hal Prince and James Lapine on the Broadway stage. |
In the Rodgers and Hammerstein generation, popular hits came out of shows and movies.
Art, in itself, is an attempt to bring order out of chaos.
Musicals are, by nature, theatrical, meaning poetic, meaning having to move the audience's imagination and create a suspension of disbelief, by which I mean there's no fourth wall.
I'm interested in the theater because I'm interested in communication with audiences. Otherwise I would be in concert music.
All the best performers bring to their role something more, something different than what the author put on paper. That's what makes theatre live. That's why it persists.
