Beschreibung | John Calvin (/ˈkælvɪn/; Mittelfranzösisch: Jehan Cauvin; Französisch: Jean Calvin [ʒɑ̃ kalvɛ̃]; 10. Juli 1509 – † 27. Mai 1564) war ein französischer Theologe, Pfarrer und Reformator in Genf während der Protestantischen Reformation. Er war eine zentrale Figur bei der Entwicklung des theologischen Systems, das später Calvinismus genannt wurde, einschließlich seiner Lehren von der Prädestination und der absoluten Souveränität Gottes über die Erlösung der menschlichen Seele vor Tod und ewiger Verdammnis. Calvinistische Lehren wurden von augustinischen und anderen christlichen Traditionen beeinflusst und weiterentwickelt.
