Er handelte den "Harris-Vertrag" zwischen den USA und Japan aus und gilt als der Diplomat, der das Japan des Shogunats in der Edo-Periode erstmals für ausländischen Handel und Kultur öffnete. Er wurde 1958 von John Wayne in dem historischen Abenteuerdrama Der Barbar und die Geisha porträtiert. |
