Beschreibung | Sylvia Alice Earle (geborene Reade; geboren am 30. August 1935) ist eine amerikanische Meeresbiologin, Ozeanografin, Forscherin, Autorin und Dozentin. Seit 1998 ist sie National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence. Earle war die erste weibliche Chefwissenschaftlerin der U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration und wurde 1998 vom Time Magazine zum ersten Hero for the Planet ernannt. Earle ist Mitglied der Gruppe Ocean Elders, die sich für den Schutz des Ozeans und seiner Tierwelt einsetzt. |
Ten percent of the big fish still remain. There are still some blue whales. There are still some krill in Antarctica. There are a few oysters in Chesapeake Bay. Half the coral reefs are still in pretty good shape, a jeweled belt around the middle of the planet. There's still time, but not a lot, to turn things around.
