At one time, she held the record for the longest duration stay in space by an American and by a woman. She has flown in space five times including a prolonged mission aboard the Russian Mir space station in 1996, and is the only American woman to have served aboard Mir. She was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in December 1996, making her the tenth person and first woman to be accorded that honor. |
I was really desperate. I don't know if you can remember back that far, but when I went to graduate school they didn't want females in graduate school. They were very open about it. They didn't mince their words. But then I got in and I got my degree.
