Coonerty twice previously served as Mayor of Santa Cruz, the county seat of Santa Cruz County, in 2008 and 2011. In addition to holding elected office, Coonerty co-founded NextSpace Coworking, and is a lecturer for the Legal Studies department at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
