November 1999) war ein englischer Anekdotenerzähler, der unter anderem mit seinen Lebenserinnerungen und verschiedenen Medienauftritten an die Öffentlichkeit getreten ist. Bevor er bekannt wurde, war er ein Künstlermodell, daher auch der Titel seines berühmtesten Werks, The Naked Civil Servant. Später wurde er aufgrund seiner extravaganten Persönlichkeit, seines Sinns für Mode und seines Witzes zu einer Schwulenikone. Sein Status als Ikone war gelegentlich umstritten, da er sich zu Themen wie der AIDS-Krise äußerte. Dies rief die Kritik von Schwulenaktivisten hervor, darunter der Menschenrechtsaktivist Peter Tatchell. |
