Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (/ˈɡɑːndi, ˈɡændi/; GAHN-dee; 2. Oktober 1869 - 30. Januar 1948) war ein indischer Rechtsanwalt, antikolonialer Nationalist und politischer Ethiker, der mit gewaltlosem Widerstand die erfolgreiche Kampagne für die Unabhängigkeit Indiens von der britischen Herrschaft anführte und später Bewegungen für Bürgerrechte und Freiheit in der ganzen Welt inspirierte. Der Ehrentitel Mahātmā (Sanskrit: "Großseeliger", "Ehrwürdiger"), der erstmals 1914 in Südafrika für ihn verwendet wurde, wird heute auf der ganzen Welt verwendet.
