Gertrude Stein (3. Februar 1874 - 27. Juli 1946) war eine amerikanische Schriftstellerin, Dichterin, Dramatikerin und Kunstsammlerin. Geboren in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, im Stadtteil Allegheny West, und aufgewachsen in Oakland, Kalifornien, zog Stein 1903 nach Paris, wo sie für den Rest ihres Lebens lebte. Sie war Gastgeberin eines Pariser Salons, in dem sich die führenden Vertreter der literarischen und künstlerischen Moderne wie Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sinclair Lewis, Ezra Pound, Sherwood Anderson und Henri Matisse trafen.
