Beschreibung | George Bancroft (* 3. Oktober 1800; † 17. Januar 1891) war ein US-amerikanischer Historiker, Staatsmann und Demokratischer Politiker, der sich maßgeblich für die Förderung der Sekundarbildung in seinem Heimatbundesstaat Massachusetts sowie auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene einsetzte. Während seiner Amtszeit als U.S. Secretary of the Navy gründete er die United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. Er war ein hochrangiger US-amerikanischer Diplomat in Europa, der diplomatische Missionen nach Großbritannien und Deutschland leitete.
