Beschreibung | Francis Quarles war ein englischer Dichter und Emblematiker. Gemessen an der Auflagenzahl seiner Werke, besonders der beiden beliebtesten, des Gedichtbandes Emblemes und der Aphorismensammlung Enchyridion, gilt er seinem Biografen Karl Josef Höltgen zufolge als der „populärste englische Dichter des 17. Jahrhunderts“. Die Zeit seines Wirkens fällt größtenteils in die politisch und religiös unruhige Regierungszeit Karls I., mit dessen Politik und den daraus erwachsenden gesellschaftlichen Konsequenzen Quarles sich in seinen Werken kritisch auseinandersetzte. |
