Beschreibung | Robert Nesta Marley OM (6. Februar 1945 – 11. Mai 1981; 1980 im Rastafari-Glauben als Berhane Selassie getauft) war ein jamaikanischer Sänger, Musiker und Songwriter. Er gilt als einer der Pioniere des Reggae und seine musikalische Karriere war geprägt von der Verschmelzung von Elementen aus Reggae, Ska und Rocksteady sowie seinem charakteristischen Gesangsstil und Songwriting. Marleys Beiträge zur Musik erhöhten die internationale Sichtbarkeit jamaikanischer Musik und machten ihn zu einer globalen Figur in der Populärkultur bis heute. Im Laufe seiner Karriere wurde Marley als eine Ikone des Rastafari bekannt und er durchdrang seine Musik mit einem Gefühl von Spiritualität. Er gilt zudem als ein globales Symbol für jamaikanische Musik und Kultur und Identität, wobei er aufgrund seines offenen Einsatzes für demokratische soziale Reformen umstritten war. 1976 überlebte Marley einen Attentatsversuch. |
