Beschreibung | Arthur Robert Ashe Jr. (10. Juli 1943 - 6. Februar 1993) war ein amerikanischer Profi-Tennisspieler, der drei Grand-Slam-Titel im Einzel gewann. Er begann im Alter von sechs Jahren mit dem Tennisspielen. Er war der erste schwarze Spieler, der in die Davis-Cup-Mannschaft der Vereinigten Staaten berufen wurde, und der einzige Schwarze, der je den Einzeltitel in Wimbledon, bei den US Open und den Australian Open gewann. Er zog sich 1980 zurück. 1975 wurde er von Rex Bellamy, Bud Collins, Judith Elian, Lance Tingay, World Tennis und dem Tennis Magazine (USA) zur Nummer 1 der Weltrangliste gewählt. In jenem Jahr wurde Ashe mit dem von einer Journalistenjury gewählten "Martini und Rossi"-Preis und dem ATP-Preis für den Spieler des Jahres ausgezeichnet.
