Sie erhielt den Spitznamen "First Lady des amerikanischen Theaters" und war die zweite Person und erste Frau, die einen Emmy, einen Grammy, einen Oscar und einen Tony Award (EGOT) gewonnen hat. Sie war auch die erste Person, die die Triple Crown of Acting gewann; bis heute ist die einzige andere Person, die beides geschafft hat, Rita Moreno. Hayes erhielt 1986 von Präsident Ronald Reagan die Presidential Medal of Freedom, die höchste zivile Auszeichnung der USA. Im Jahr 1988 wurde sie mit der National Medal of Arts ausgezeichnet. |
