Dezember 1968) war ein US-amerikanischer Schriftsteller und erhielt 1962 den Nobelpreis für Literatur "für seine realistischen und phantasievollen Schriften, die einfühlsamen Humor und scharfe soziale Wahrnehmung miteinander verbinden." Er wurde als "ein Gigant der amerikanischen Literatur" bezeichnet. Die meisten von Steinbecks Werken spielen in Mittelkalifornien, insbesondere im Salinas Valley und in der Region der California Coast Ranges.
