David Hockney, OM CH RA (* 9. Juli 1937 in Bradford) ist ein britischer Maler, Grafiker, Bühnenbildner und Fotograf. Er gilt als ein einflussreicher Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts mit den Genre-Schwerpunkten Landschaftsmalerei und Porträtmalerei. Hockney wird oft als ein führender Vertreter der Pop-Art nahestehenden Kunst bezeichnet, verfügt allerdings über ein eigenständiges künstlerisches Profil. Seine Werke erzielen auf Auktionen hohe Preise. So erzielte sein ikonografisches Bild Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) (1972) bei einer Versteigerung bei Christie’s am 15. November 2018 einen Verkaufspreis von 90,3 Millionen US-Dollar. Bis 2019 war es das teuerste auf einer Auktion versteigerte Bild eines lebenden Künstlers weltweit.
